Sometimes we
get lucky and find one of those antique lamps that used to hang in the old general store
or at grandma's house. This one has the retractor in the crown. This enabled
you to pull it down to trim the wick, add oil and light it. Then give it a gentle
push and it went back up to the ceiling. The roses are on the inside as this is the
view most people had of the lamp. With the high 10 -12 - 14 foot ceilings most
folks built before the turn of the century (this allowed heat to rise above the family or
customers) few if any would see the outside of the shade. When lit the art work does
show through to the outside. Both of these lamps still burn lamp oil as
originally configured. |

| Here is a second working oil lamp.
This one is painted with an outdoor - African motif. It is designed to hang
lower. The artwork is on the outside showing off many wild beasts of the plains of
Africa. |
