A quick history lesson for big city people and younger folks.

Growing up in a rural area during the 20's,  30's and 40's  you might remember the original "Courtship Lamps".   Back then in many areas when TVA and Rural Electric came through with electric power many homes were wired with just the minimum capacity.    If you visit or even buy one of these old homes one of the first things you will notice is ONE light bulb in the ceiling fixture ( if there is one), and not every room has wall plugs.   It was possible to run the new Frigerator and a light in one of the other rooms but if the electric Ice Box kicked on while you had two or three other things turned on... there went the power.... the home was pitched into darkness.

So what does this have to do with "Courtship Lamps"?

When a suitor would come to visit.  Mom, Dad and any little brothers and sisters would retire to the kitchen to read, listen to the new radio or whatever.  Pretending not to hear or care what was going on in the parlor.  But,  remember, we can't turn on to many lights or we may be replacing a fuse.    The Courtship Lamp was the perfect solution.  It provided a soft light for the couple in the parlor (not as dark as they might have wanted) while at the same time not as bright as Dad wanted.

During the late 50's these soft lights made a comeback as TV lights.  Now we ship a lot of them as nightlights. A soft gentle glow in the hallway sure beats having a guest or spouse hit the wall switch and throw 100 watts or more into your resting eyes.

As with all our pieces these all started our snow white.  So if you have a special need just contact us and we will be glad to custom paint one for you.

Here are a few examples from our inventory.  These come in three sizes.

Measured from the table top to the top of the lamp

A) small cylinder 9" tall
B) tall cylinder 13" tall
  C) round ball 9" tall
All have a antique finish to make them period correct.
